Backups: Faced with a corrupted file, TimeData guarantees data integrity
TimeData is a continuous data backup solution for the protection of critical business information. Developed by Double-Take Software, TimeData operates byte by byte in real time, rather than by successive snapshots. When the need for data recovery arises, the precise data required can be restored easily and quickly. Tim Higgins, TimeData Enterprise Sales Manager explains: “The system administrator doesn't have to worry about backup windows, because TimeData continuously captures changes and backs them up. It's easy to go back to a specific time point and quickly restore exactly the data needed, without hunting through tape storage.” Recovering data from a specific point in time, today, yesterday, or last month, facilitates system recovery and stabilisation after data corruption or accidental deletion of files, or for system audits.
Compared with the full Double-Take system failover solution, TimeData is designed to offer faster recovery following less important incidents such as corruption of individual files, an Exchange mailbox or an SQL Server database. Instead of creating periodic snapshots, TimeData maintains a history of all changes to a protected file while the file is open in application software and as soon as the file is closed. TimeData is the answer to increasing demands for real time protection of data without the need to plan and run periodic backups, or the administrative overhead of traditional restoration procedures.
F5 Networks chooses Double-Take for Linux
When network acceleration specialists F5 Networks were looking for a failover solution for their multi-platform server environment, Double-Take for Linux helped make the choice easier. “Double-Take for Linux was easy to install, and it requires no special management procedures” says Richard Arsenault, director of information systems at F5 Networks. “We no longer need to tie up our system administrators continuously monitoring server availability – there are more interesting and useful tasks in the datacenter.” What counts for F5 is that Double-Take for Linux is effortless, fast, and reliable. The failover of a Linux server now takes place automatically independently of the distance separating the production system from its backup. Open source-based operational deployments, applications, and data benefit from all the advantages of an effective disaster recovery solution with Double-Take Software's real-time replication and fast failover.

Virtualisation: Red Hat ups the ante
With its recent acquisition of Qumranet, the Israel-based developer of kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) technology, for $107 million, Red Hat – who's Xen offering left many in the industry doubtful – is showing that it intends to be a serious player in the virtualisation market alongside VMware, Microsoft, Citrix and Sun. Qumranet's technology coupled with SolidIce gives Red Hat solutions covering the server farm and endpoint devices; it's possible that this could become the market standard for virtualising linux deployments. Customers who have deployed Xen will be glad to know that Red Hat has committed to continuing support for their earlier virtualisation solution.
