X2X Migration: Infrastructure transformation made easy

Server and storage migration is a fact of life in the datacenter as the infrastructure evolves to meet new challenges. But “downtime has always been the biggest challenge with migrations and will remain so until workloads can be moved without user interruption” says Brace Rennels, Technical Marketing Manager at Double-Take Software, in a discussion paper on the problems of migration in heterogeneous environments.

The arrival of virtualization technology and migration tools such as VMware VMotion, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix Live Migration changes the game, as far as they allow the migration of live workloads across virtual infrastructures with minimal production impact. However, these tools only address the virtualized datacenter and generally only the vendor's own virtual environment.

“Many times the virtual solution actually locks the datacenter manager into hardware specific solutions making it that much more difficult to move from one solution platform to another” writes Rennels. “Site and datacenter consolidation still have these same challenges even though many have adopted the virtualization technology to facilitate and centralize some of the management”, he adds. “This is why an X2X migration solution will dynamically change the datacenter landscape.”

The notion of X2X migration covers the full range of datacenter platform migration operations: physical to virtual (P2V), virtual to physical (V2P), and virtual to virtual (V2V). It addresses not only any combination of server migration, but also applies to the migration of storage systems and especially SAN migration.

But for an X2X migration solution to be effective, it needs to support workload replication continuously and in real time, reducing to an absolute minimum – if not eliminating – system down time and the impact on user productivity. X2X migration tools need to support migration between dissimilar hardware platforms and across different virtualization technologies. Tomorrow's datacenters, according to analysts, will be built on multiple virtualization solutions. Only the most flexible, vendor-neutral migration tools will be up to the job. Platespin (now part of Novell) has already staked a claim to a share in the market. With the recent introduction of Double-Take® Move, Double-Take Software takes on the challenge of the dynamic infrastructure with a solution addressing the full range of migration operations faced by today's datacenter managers.

Exclusive: Double-Take Move White Board Talk

Double-Take Move is the only solution on the market capable of replicating the operating system, applications, and data in real time and over the LAN or the WAN. How does it work? Gabriel Chadeau, Director of Marketing at Double-Take France, talks us through the key features in this video. Three practical case studies demonstrate how Double-Take Move facilitates P2P migration, P2V (ESX, Hyper-V, or other VM) migration, and SAN migration.
